Abstract
There is provided a system and method for an interoperable keychest. There is provided a method for use by a central key repository (CKR) or keychest to provide content access authorizations to distributors, comprising receiving a key information file including a first encrypted second key for decrypting with a first key and a content identification, decrypting the first encrypted second key using a first key to retrieve the second key, receiving, from a distributor, a key request including the content identification, encrypting the second key using a third key to generate a second encrypted second key, and transmitting the second encrypted second key to the distributor in response to the receiving of the key request. In this manner, key management for protected distributors using different DRM schemas or systems may be simplified and made interoperable.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION(1) 1. Field of the Invention(2) The present invention relates generally to digital media. More particularly, the present invention relates to digital rights management for digital media.(3) 2. Background Art(4) Although digital media distribution is growing in popularity and becoming a viable alternative to purchasing retail physical media for many consumers, there are still significant barriers present before consumers can wholly embrace digital media without reservations. Many of these reservations revolve around the limited interoperability between different playback devices or service providers, and the possibility that media files may become inoperable in the future due to new formats or protection schemes. For example, competing digital media distribution channels may use incompatible media formats and proprietary DRM systems, and the closing or termination of video offerings due to financial difficulties or company ownership changes may leave consumers with media files that cannot be consumed anymore.(5) Thus, there is a need for interoperable protected contents that can survive changes in the distribution market and provide continued service to consumers regardless of the original distribution channel used and the original media file format. Claims
1. A method for use by a key repository, having a memory and a processor, to provide access authorizations to a content, the method comprising: receiving, by the processor, a key information file from a preparer without receiving the content, the key information file including a first encrypted second key, encryption metadata and a content identification, the first encrypted second key being for decrypting with a first key; storing, by the processor, the key information file in the memory of the key repository, wherein the key repository neither stores nor distributes the content; decrypting, by the processor, the first encrypted second key using the first key to retrieve the second key; receiving, by the processor from a distributor distributing the content to a consumer, a key request including the content identification; encrypting, by the processor, the second key using a third key to generate a second encrypted second key, wherein the processor identifies the second key using the content identification received from the distributor; and transmitting, by the processor, the second encrypted second key to the distributor in response to the receiving of the key request, the distributor receiving the content from the preparer and not the key repository, and the distributor providing the content and a DRM license including the second key for decrypting the content to the consumer.

A key repository for providing access authorizations to a content, the central key repository comprising: a memory having a first key; a processor in communication with the memory, the processor configured to: receive a key information file from a preparer without receiving the content, the key information file including a first encrypted second key, encryption metadata and a content identification, the first encrypted second key being for decrypting with the first key; store the key information file in the memory of the key repository, wherein the key repository neither stores nor distributes the content; decrypt the first encrypted second key using the first key retrieved from the memory to retrieve the second key; receive, from a distributor distributing the content to a consumer, a key request including the content identification; encrypt the second key using a third key to generate a second encrypted second key, wherein the processor identifies the second key using the content identification received from the distributor; and transmit the second encrypted second key to the distributor in response to receiving the key request, the distributor receiving the content from the preparer and not the key repository, and the distributor providing the content and a DRM license including the second key for decrypting the content to the consumer.

A method for use by a key repository having a memory and a processor to provide access authorizations to a content, the method comprising: receiving, by the processor, a key information file from a preparer without receiving the content, the key information file including a title ID and a first encrypted title key encrypted using a key repository public key, the first encrypted title key being for decrypting using a key repository private key; storing the key information file in the memory of the key repository, wherein the key repository neither stores nor distributes the content; decrypting, by the processor, the first encrypted title key using the key repository private key to retrieve the title key; receiving, by the processor from a distributor distributing the content to a consumer, a key request including the title ID, wherein the distributor receives the content from the preparer not the key repository; encrypting, by the processor, the title key using a distributor public key to generate a second encrypted title key, wherein the processor identifies the title key using the title ID received from the distributor; and transmitting, by the processor, a DRM license including the second encrypted title key to the distributor in response to the receiving of the key request for the distributor to provide the content and the DRM license to the consumer.
