Abstract

Embodiments provide for a system, comprising a plurality of encoders configured to generate a plurality of variant streams, and a cross-variant Instantaneous Decoder Refresh (IDR) identifier configured to inspect the plurality of variant streams, identify IDR frames in each of the plurality of variant streams, determine which IDR frames correspond to cross-variant boundaries, and demarcate the IDR frames corresponding to cross-variant boundaries.

Background

BACKGROUND

A video format is a container that includes a data stream and metadata. The data stream may include a video stream and an accompanying audio stream. Metadata includes information about the video stream, such as the bitrate, resolution, and codec. The bitrate correlates to the quality of the video stream, while the resolution indicates the picture size of the video stream.

The codec is a system or program that encodes or decodes a data stream. An encoder is a system or program that implements the codec to encode a data stream while a decoder is a system or program that implements the codec to decode a data stream. Codecs are often used to compress data streams in order to reduce the size of video files for transfer over a computer network. Codecs may also be used to decompress data streams for media playback or data stream file manipulation.

Claims

1. A method comprising: inspecting a plurality of variant streams; identifying Instantaneous Decoder Refresh (IDR) frames in each variant stream of the plurality of variant streams; determining a first set of IDR frames corresponding to a first type of cross-variant boundary; determining a second set of IDR frames corresponding to a second type of cross-variant boundary; and demarcating the first and second set of IDR frames. || 8. A non-transitory computer-readable medium containing computer program code that, when executed by operation of one or more computer processors, performs an operation comprising: inspecting a plurality of variant streams output by respective encoders; identifying Instantaneous Decoder Refresh (IDR) frames in each variant stream of the plurality of variant streams; determining which IDR frames correspond to cross-variant boundaries; demarcating the IDR frames corresponding to cross-variant boundaries; and transmitting the plurality of variant streams with the demarcated IDR frames to a segmenter, wherein no IDR frames are added to the plurality of variant streams after they are output by the respective encoders and before they are transmitted to the segmenter. || 16. A method comprising: inspecting a plurality of variant streams output by respective encoders; identifying Instantaneous Decoder Refresh (IDR) frames in each of the plurality of variant streams; determining which IDR frames correspond to cross-variant boundaries; demarcating the IDR frames corresponding to cross-variant boundaries; and transmitting the plurality of variant streams with the demarcated IDR frames to a segmenter, wherein no IDR frames are added to the plurality of variant streams after they are output by the respective encoders and before they are transmitted to the segmenter.
