Abstract

Systems, methods and articles of manufacture for transcoding media content. Embodiments include receiving a requestto perform a transcoding operation on a first instance of media content. The first instance of media content is analyzed to determine metadata describing the first instance of media content. Embodiments determine a set of currently available system resources for use inperforming the transcoding operation on the first instance of media content. Additionally, embodiments divide the transcoding operation into a plurality of sub-operations based onthe determined metadata and the determined set of currently available system resources. Each of the plurality of sub-operations corresponds to a respective portion of the first instance of media content. An execution of the plurality of sub-operations is initiated to produce a plurality of encoded fragments. Embodiments then combine the plurality of encodedfragments to produce an encoded instance of media content.

Background

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS(1) So that the manner in which the above recited aspects are attained and can be understood in detail, a more particular description of embodiments of the invention, briefly summarized above, may be had by reference to the appended drawings.(2) It is to be noted, however, that the appended drawings illustrate only typical embodiments of this invention and are therefore not to be considered limiting of its scope, for the invention may admit to other equally effective embodiments.(3) FIG. 1 is a block diagram illustrating a system including a content processing system configured with a metadata-based transcoding component, according to one embodiment described herein.(4) FIG. 2 is a block diagram illustrating a workflow for metadata-based transcoding, according to one embodiment described herein.(5) FIG. 3 is a flow diagram illustrating a method for performing metadata-based transcoding for an instance of video content, according to one embodiment described herein.(6) FIG. 4 is a flow diagram illustrating a method for performing metadata-based transcodingfor an instance of video content containing textual regions, according to one embodiment described herein.(7) FIG. 5 is a block diagram illustrating a content processing system, according to one embodiment described herein.(8) FIG. 6 is a flow diagram illustrating a method for deploying virtual machines for use in transcoding media content, according to oneembodiment described herein.(9) FIG.

Claims

1. A method, comprising: receiving a request to perform a transcoding operation on a first instance of media content; analyzing the first instance of media content to determine metadata describing the first instance of media content; determining a set of currently available system resources for use in performing the transcoding operation on the first instance of media content;dividing the transcoding operation into a plurality of sub-operations based on the determined metadata and the determined set of currently available system resources, wherein eachof the plurality of sub-operations corresponds to a respective portion of the first instance of media content; initiating an execution of the plurality of sub-operations to produce a plurality of encoded fragments; and combining the plurality of encoded fragments to produce an encoded instance of media content. 10. A non-transitory computer-readable medium containing computer program code that, when executed, performs an operation comprising: receiving a request to perform a transcoding operation on a first instance of media content;analyzing the first instance of media content to determine metadata describing the first instance of media content; determining a set of currently available system resources for use in performing the transcoding operation on the first instance of media content; dividing the transcoding operation into a plurality of sub-operations based on the determined metadata and the determined set of currently available system resources, wherein each of the plurality of sub-operations corresponds to a respective portion of the first instance of media content; initiating an execution of the plurality of sub-operations to produce a plurality of encoded fragments; and combining the plurality of encoded fragments to produce anencoded instance of media content. 19. A system, comprising: a processor; and a memory containing a program that, when executed by operation of the processor, performs an operation comprising: receiving a request to perform a transcoding operation on a first instance of media content; analyzing the first instance of media content to determine metadata describing the first instance of media content; determining a set of currently available systemresources for use in performing the transcoding operation on the first instance of media content; dividing the transcoding operation into a plurality of sub-operations based on the determined metadata and the determined set of currently available system resources, wherein each of the plurality of sub-operations corresponds to a respective portion of the first instance of media content; initiating an execution of the plurality of sub-operations to produce a plurality of encoded fragments; and combining the plurality of encoded fragments to produce an encoded instance of media content.
